Salisbury Cathedral – a 15-minute drive
Salisbury Cathedral at the heart of the city and is a superb example of gothic medieval architecture, boasting at 123m the tallest spire in England. Its Chapter House contains the worlds best preserved Magna Carta, which is on view to visitors, there is also Europes oldest working clock. Regular guided tours of the cathedral and tower are available throughout the year. The cathedral close is a great place to have a wander or perhaps visit one of the museums or the National Trusts Mompesson House. Salisbury itself has a wide and varied selection of shops, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes; there is also a market twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Discover the dramatic and diverse history of this ancient hill fortress. Founded in the iron Age, Romans, Saxons and Normans have all left their mark. Situated high above Salisbury Plain, this was the original Salisbury – and it occupies a special place in history. William the Conqueror built a great palace and the first Salisbury Cathedral here. Old Sarum offers superb woodland and chalk-down walks and views across beautiful countryside covered with wild flowers.
Stonehenge – a 15 minute drive
Visit this amazing World Heritage Site and see the stones that have puzzled for centuries. As old as the Pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge exerts a mysterious fascination. Learn even more in the new visitor centre that is due to open in 2014. Make time to explore the extensive prehistoric landscape. Stonehenge is surrounded by the mysterious remains or ceremonial and domestic structures – some older than the monument itself.
Wilton House – just over the road
One of England’s finest country houses the home of the Earl of Pembroke is a great place for a family day out. Enjoy learning about the history of the house and grounds with its famous seventeenth-century state rooms and Palladian bridge. For the children, there is a fantastic adventure playground amongst the trees and woodland walks. With a restaurant and gift shop as well you can have an entire day out with ice cream to finish!
